I won’t call it marriage if it’s exclusive

November 7, 2008

I found this post from Eating Out Loud on Offbeat Bride. Equal rights for the LGBTQ community is one of my biggest issues. I just DON’T UNDERSTAND why there are people in this world who want to DENY others of LOVE. I don’t get it. I’ll never get it. To all of you in California who have a level head, who think love is blind, who know love has no gender, please speak out. And know I’m pulling for you in Illinois.

From Eating Out Loud:

So, I awoke this morning to learn that my relationship with my partner is no longer deemed valid. It’s no longer legal for gay couples to marry. Gay relationships are somehow sub-par, not equivalent, and no longer worthy of protection. And you know what? I’m pissed and tired of holding it in.

I decided to snap a photo of my ring placed on a slightly different finger than normal to express exactly how I feel toward every single person who voted Yes on Prop 8. It’s my personal version of ‘let freedom ring’. The battle for equality changes course but it’s very far from over.

I’m sure some of you will believe in Prop 8 and that’s your right. Please make sure to update your reader to remove my blog and to delete any bookmarks to my site. I won’t take it personally but as for Prop 8 and your intrusion on my life … I take it very personally. For more information on the opposition to Prop 8, please visit NoOnProp8.com.

I welcome supporters of gay rights to snap your own photo showing your wedding ring on your middle finger. Spread the word that this fight isn’t over. Whether you’re gay, straight, bi, white, blue or tan — show your support by letting freedom ring on your blog then go here to log it for everyone to see!”

I love this! I think everyone with a engagement/wedding ring should do the same as the pic and send a message to California. I know I am going to!

I would completely be snapping away if I were married.

    What a great idea.

I could not agree more. I think I said the exact same things to my mom this morning during a 20 minute rant.

If I had a wedding ring, I’d be in.

What a huge step backwards! As soon as I find my camera, I’m doing one. Totally going to forward your blog to some friends.

I met a fellow interpreter here in LA who refers to her husband as her ‘partner’, simply because she knows so many people who don’t have the right to have a husband.

And can I just say how awesome you are! I heart you, Renee.

While I agree 100% that marriage should not be denied to the gay community, this quote isn’t accurate:

I just DON’T UNDERSTAND why there are people in this world who want to DENY others of LOVE.

By voting against gay marriage, people aren’t denying others love at all, because that still exists and they are still able to love, they’re just denying them equal rights under the law (which is prohibited by the Constitution).

Sorry to be nitpicky about it what you said because I do understand what you are saying!

j- I think that it’s their denying the LGBT community their right to declare their love. Marriage is the ultimate form of commitment and you invite your friends and family to your wedding so that they can see you promise your love to this one person for the rest of their lives. Denying anyone marriage is denying people the right to celebrate their love.

*The comments made by Rachel no way reflect the opinion of Reneee…though she may agree with me

I feel the same way, girl. This makes me wish I had an engagement or wedding ring to make the point, too, even though I know I could do it with another ring.

    What a great idea!
