simple gifts

September 3, 2009

Hi blog world, I’m taking a bit of an extended break from you for a little bit. I’m mostly just tired and I have a honeymoon scheduled to begin next weekend. I refuse to be online during my honeymoon. So it might be awhile before you hear too much from me.

All I’d like to say is… life is simple. And sometimes simple is good.  And sometimes simple is exactly what you need.
I never had a simple life. In elementary school, I played all the sports and took piano lessons and went on lots of bike rides with the neighborhood boys. In junior high, I took piano lessons, voice lessons, and was a cheerleader for football and basketball. I was part of the choir, the Quiz Bowl team, the Spell Bowl team, and the Community Service Club.  In high school, I loaded it up for my college application. President of the choir, captain of the Fine Arts academic team, Vice President of Thespian Society, National Honors Society, Quiz Bowl, History academic team, pom squad, voice lessons, Madrigal Society, Music Honors Society, Treehuggers club, theatre performances, and I did the morning announcements. You name it, I did it. In college, I multitasked some more… director of the Women’s Resource Center, student computing manager, intern for a U.S. Senator, student government commissioner, choir, theatre, Straight-Gay alliance, Feminists United, oh, and I wrote a 100 page thesis in a semester.

Oh, and I got an ulcer.

Life has never been simple for me. I worked my ass off as a camp counselor; alarm at 6am, lights out at 10pm, never a break until midnight. I worked my ass off as a campaigner; hour commute, 10 hour work days, 7 days a week, three months without ONE day off. I worked my ass off as an office manager; hour + 15 min. commute, no lunch break, Saturday events, angry angry angry phone calls.

Life has gotten simple. I got married. I work. I feed my cat. I cook dinner but sometimes suggest Chipotle. I drink wine. I read blogs. I watch the Food Network. I drink coffee. I try new recipes. I reupholster chairs and put IKEA furniture together. I day dream. I read.

That’s the biggest thing — I’ve been reading again. I hadn’t read a book since last summer, true story.

I don’t want anything to get in the way of the quality me-time I’ve had over the last couple of months. I’ve had drinks with friends in the middle of the afternoon. I’ve gone out for bagel sandwiches with my husband on lazy Sunday mornings. I’ve left my kitchen a mess and I haven’t cared. And I’ve spent time reading before bed.

It’s the simplicity that I’m enjoying, the simplicity that I didn’t know how badly I needed. I was choking for something and didn’t realize I was choking to do nothing.

I want my life to be simple all the time too. It is mostly simple now, but occasionally I’ll find myself overloaded with my commitments. I have this thing that I do after work (or whenever I can) that I call “general laziness” and that’s when I take time out to just veg and do whatever I want from reading, surfing the net, or watching tv. Love. Have fun on your honeymoon!

I love this post Renee. I have always lived a sort of simple life and as I’ve grown older things have gotten more complicated. For me this summer was about making them simple again and getting back to basics. I’ve succeeded and I’m not going to give that up. I am glad that you’ve found the joy in the simple things too, because with that, comes true happiness.

Okay, I definitely read that as “porn squad” the first time around. And I was all, “Wow, they didn’t have that at my school.” Okay, I can read. I promise.

i aspire to live a simple life. Wine + food network + lots of reading = ❤

I constantly find that since the ripe age of like 14 my life has been go-go-go-go. Glad you're getting back to the basics. I'm fairly certain I'm aspiring to do that post-honeymoon 🙂

(where are you going for yours btw?? Have an amazing time!!!)

Your simplified life sounds exactly like how I wish mine were right now – but then again, I feel like I’m the one complicating things, so I should just as easily be able to simplfy! Enjoy your honeymoon!!

sounds like you definitely deserve that simplicity renee. i hope you enjoy it all to the fullest 🙂

See you find simplicity, I find chaos.
My day revolves around Greek school, driving, errands, cleaning, back rehab, homework, food, activism, fundraising, etc.
I will soon be adding to that the fact that we are joining the Greek Church so that Diana can join the Church (they are an all or nothing religion). This will involve Dan and I going to school and learning Greek.

Oh yeah, and karate starts soon.

Hey look! A bottle of wine!

I am so excited to a short vacation away from school. I am always stressed out, I need a break.

Simple is good. It’s something that I need right now, but rarely get to have. Enjoy your bloggy break, and have a fabulous honeymoon. If you need some book recommendations, I’ve read some great ones recently.

I love simple. I feel the same way, sometimes… simple is just better. After living such a crazy life for so long I forgotten what it was like to just SLOW DOWN. Enjoy your bloggy break and your honeymoon. I’m so happy for you gorgeous.

    xoxo

Good for you! This post makes me so happy for you. While I’ve never really had a simple life, either, I have enjoyed reading more and writing more ever since I graduated from college. And I have a few book series that I like to read over and over…

I’m happy that things are falling in line for you. You deserve it.

That’s so wonderful. I hope you have a fantastic and relaxing break. 🙂

    Huzzah for you.

I hope your honeymoon is filled with awesome nothingness. I hope it’s a breath of fresh air, and beautiful in every way.

I always know that life is good when I have time to get to the library and then actually finish the books before they are due. I’m actually looking forward to the dull, yet cozy hibernation of fall for just that reason.

It’s that simplicity that my life has also become that I’m afraid of losing by going to grad school. I know it’s only temporary, but I rather enjoy it as you clearly do too.

    Enjoy your honeymoon darlin’!

I agree about a simple life since now all I have to do is work. Kinda nice to not have a crazy schedule.

Hope you have a fantastic time on your honeymoon!

    See you Saturday!

You definitely should. I totally understand. You are still loved and thought of. I am so proud of you. Everyone should learn to just sit back and love and really live life, not just survive it.

Oh it sounds amazing Renee!! Good job!! This is so much the way that I’ve done things, and now that I’m working part time I could kind of cry from happiness. I love this quiet time where I can just be- I’m glad you’ve found yours too.

So glad that the new simplicity is working out so well for you. I understand where you are coming from; blogging while amazing does take a lot of a person from time to time.

Enjoy the honeymoon! Can’t wait to hear all about it.
