Today’s Prompt: Moment. Pick one moment during which you felt most alive this year. Describe it in vivid detail (texture, smells, voices, noises, colors).
It probably comes as no surprise that I feel most alive when I travel. This moment is born out of my travel bug. At almost the last minute, I decided to accompany my husband on a business trip to New Orleans. He was in a conference all day, so I was left to explore a new city by myself. It reminded me of the time I backpacked Europe by myself… new sights, new smells, new foods, new experiences. I got to relish them and sit in that moment for as long as I wanted.
One particular moment came from the square in the photo. It was a warm March day, in the upper 60s, and the sun was bright. I had just discovered the most authentic gelato I’d had since living in Italy and I sat down on a quiet bench to enjoy it. I didn’t distract myself with my iPod or with Twitter. I just sat. I remember a bird in a tree next to me fluttering about and singing to me. It smelled like spring. We hadn’t smelled spring in Chicago yet. People were mulling about with strollers, friends, artists… I could hear jazz music in the distance and watched horse-drawn carriages clip-clop by.
It was perfect. And I felt at peace for the first time in a long time.
Such a beautiful story. I love those moments where we don’t distract ourselves from ourselves.
What a great memory! I didn’t get to spend as much time traveling this year as I usually do and I definitely missed it. I had several memories I thought about using, but in the end I picked a not-so-happy one. I’m glad you had a little moment of peace – things can be so crazy!
This year was the year I traveled the most that I have in the past few years and I loved it.
Love this post 🙂
Ah, Jackson Square. To your immediate right is Cafe Du Monde where I hope you had the beignets with a steaming hot cup of joe. Traveled to N.O. last Xmas. Love the city.
Travel always brings about these moments for me too. What a great story, it’s good to take a look around and smell those roses I guess you could say. I love New Orleans, can’t wait to revisit!
I haven’t been to New Orleans since I was a teen-ager — many, many years ago — but your post reminded me of how much I loved it. What a nice moment to have. I love moments like that!
I have wondered around NOLA before as well, accompanying my then-BF (now, he is my worst-most-disliked-but-not-actually-hated-ex-BF) on a work trip. I wondered over by Jackson Square, ate a beignet at Cafe Du Monde, and window shopped at Crescent City books and a very random antique-type store next door. I saw Tibetan skull cup and the image of that shallow dish made from a human skull is probably the most iconic image I have of NOLA. Second image though is the crowds of people and the music and the friendly but insistent street-person crowd. I haven’t been back since the Storm though; have no idea if it feels the same today.
Mmmm, gelato. I haven’t had a taste of good gelato since ’05 when I traveled to Rome. So glad you were able to find some and find some peace, too.
