Coming Out as Feminist: A Social Experiment
My colleague Alex said recently, “If I’m going to become a feminist, it’s going to be this semester.” He’s in two women’s studies classes and has decided to pursue the women’s studies graduate certificate. (I’m so proud.)
Inspired by literature from his Feminism, Pop Culture, & Media class, he did a little social experiment. He “came out” as feminist on Facebook. He wondered if doing so as a man would cause his Facebook friends to question his sexuality as it does when a woman self-identifies as feminist.
This is what happened:
As you can see, his first comment showed up in just over an hour. It confirmed Alex’s suspicions: The knee-jerk reaction to a person self-identifying as feminist is to question that person’s sexuality.
I thought this mini experiment was fascinating. Why do we equate certain kinds of activism with sexuality?
