In the holiday spirit (and a giveaway winner!)

December 12, 2011

Let me introduce you to our tree. Over the weekend, we traipsed throughout the city to find the perfect tree. For us, the perfect tree is anything under $50 and doesn’t look like Charlie Brown’s tree.  The first place we stopped wanted $85 for a decent tree, so we found a troop of Boy Scouts willing to part with this beauty for around $40.  Man, this town…

Here’s a picture of our delightful tree. It’s a blue and gold theme, after our alma maters.  Our first year together, we had trouble deciding on a tree topper and ended up throwing a Santa hat on top until we found the perfect star or angel. Well, the Santa hat stuck.

So, as I’ve done in the past, I thought I’d introduce you to some of our favorite Christmas ornaments. As you might remember, we have a nutcracker named after Joe’s favorite beatle, George, and a bird named after mine, Paul. Last Christmas Joe came upon a box of his childhood ornaments and added a drummer boy to our tree, appropriately dubbed Ringo.  We’re still looking for the perfect John.

Each year, we pick out a new ornament or two together. This year we’ve added a rubber ducky and a mug of beer. I think they fit in nicely with the rest of our goofy theme.

The final ornament I’ll show is J-Rex the Christmasaurus. The J stands for Jesus. J-Rex is a bit of a celebrity in the Powers household. He gets prime placement front and center.

And last but not least….
Congrats, Miss Ashley, on winning the Barenaked Ladies holiday CD. I’ll be in touch! Thanks for all your suggestions, though. I’m currently listening to some Bing Crosby.

We have the same dinosaur ornament (but we don’t refer to it as J-Rex. That’s so great!) My fiance loves dinosaurs, so my brother and his kiddos gave it to him for Christmas a couple years ago.

I love the special ornaments that have a story behind them. I’ve been waiting for finals to be over to get out all of our decorations…only 48 more hours!
