Determined to have a summer

June 17, 2012

This post is underwritten by Old Navy. Whether you’re looking for a tankini, bikini, or a one piece, Old Navy has you confidently covered at a great price.

Do you remember when summers were a lot less work?  Like, when we were 8 or 9 and the only thing on the schedule was going to play at the beach or riding bikes with the neighborhood kids?  And our only concerns were, “Where the heck is my good sand pail?!” and “Oh man, Lindsay went to Orlando for the week. Now who will play Power Rangers with me in the backyard?”

I’m determined to get that carefree summer back one of these days.

Despite being a student and getting summer vacation (suckers!), my summer is just as busy as my school year.  I spent a week in Indiana sorting through all my childhood goodies.  I spent 10 days driving around the Southeast, visiting friends and family and exploring Tennessee.  This week, I’ll start teaching at my first camp, and after a whirlwind trip to a wedding in Minneapolis in July, I’ll start teaching at my second camp.  And as soon as I get back from Camp #2, we move.  And as soon as we move, I start my Ph.D. program.

…but I’m determined to experience summer.

I’m going to sit out on my patio with iced tea.  I’m going to drive with the windows down and the music up (most likely I’ll be blaring Call Me, Maybe).  I’m going to wear flip flops and shorts and messy buns and big earrings.  I’m going to soak in weekend festivals and eat my weight in roasted corn and slushies.  I’m going to drink up the light of each sunny day and revel in the cool mornings and hot hot evenings.

But despite all these events, I’m holding out for something tropical, a real vacation… something with all day sun and palm trees and white sand and salty water and adult beverages umbrellas on the beach and in my drinks. I’ve got my eye on San Juan.  (I’ve got West Side Story stuck in my head.)

And for that, I’ll need a new bathing suit, of course.  I think this one, in my favorite color, will do nicely, don’t you?

How do you plan to embrace the summer?

Thank you to Old Navy for sponsoring my post. I was compensated for this post as a member of Clever Girls Collective, but the content is all my own.

I just signed up at their website. You can click the ad in my sidebar and find a link at the top of their site that says “Join.” I really like a lot of the brands they work with!
